Monumental 19th-century painting signed by A. Casanova, depicting a woodland landscape
A monumental Spanish painting from the second half of the 19thcentury. This oil-on-canvas work—retaining its original canvas—issigned “A. Casanova” at the bottom center and depicts anevocative woodland landscape featuring deer. It is a large-scalepiece of remarkable artistic quality, in which the imposing scale ofthe trees and the depth of the vegetation create an immersive view. The composition opens onto a clearing with uneven terrain, whererocks, exposed roots, and small shrubs guide the eye into the heartof the forest. A stag with branching antlers emerges in a sunlitarea, while a second deer appears further back. To the right, a poolof water reflects the shadows of the trees and leads toward a brightopening between the trunks. The foliage, rendered with small, layeredbrushstrokes, blends deep greens, golden yellows, and coppery hues, evoking an autumnal atmosphere. The painting reflects a sensibilityaligned with the Romantic and Naturalistic traditions of 19th-centuryEuropean landscape art. The subtle presence of the animals enhancesthe grandeur of nature, lending the scene a Romantic andcontemplative quality. The signature has been associated with theprominent Spanish painter Antonio Casanova y Estorach (1847–1896).A native of Tortosa, the artist trained in Barcelona and Madridbefore eventually settling in Paris; he was best known for hishistorical paintings and genre scenes set in period environments.(The painting is not currently accompanied by a formal expertappraisal, though one may be requested for an additional fee.)
The work is housed in a rare, imposing gilded wooden frame, distinguished by elaborate corner ornamentation featuring scrolls andfoliage. A period frame with a striking decorative effect, whichenhances the presence of the artwork and accentuates the warm tonesof the landscape. It shows minor scratches and signs of wear.
An ideal painting for a grand living room, a library, a historicresidence, or a formal reception space, capable of serving as thefocal point of the interior design. The lush vegetation and thetranquil atmosphere of the woods lend themselves well to both classicand contemporary settings. The piece shows some signs of age, but isoverall in good condition.
